Relapse Prevention
and Women's Development in Aizawl
In a strategic move to improve socio economic conditions
of commercial sex workers and drug addicts, IGSSS forged a partnership
with Jeriko Khwalbuk, Life Home Society, in Mizoram. A brief account
of how this partnership has changed the lives of some inmates
is shared.
| Zuzapi |
| An old acquaintance brought Zuzapi (name changed) to Jeriko
Khualbuk in May 2003. She had lost her father at the age of
7. Her mother soon re-married and left the young girl in the
care of her grand parents. Due to poor economic conditions,
she could not continue her schooling. Though Zuzapi was responsible
and hard working, because of lack of direction, she soon got
into the company of drug users and those involved in commercial
sex work. Soon she got involved in the trade and started to
disappear for long periods from home. In the course of her
treatment at Jeriko, she was found to be a smart and quick
learner. Zuzapi learnt tailoring fast and is now able to support
herself. She says that she would like to go back to her studies
next year. At present, with IGSSS' support, she is rearing
10 chicks and stitching clothes to earn money for her admission
fees and books. Today, Zuzapi has a bright future ahead of
her. |
| Lily |
| Lily (name changed) was admitted to the centre in October
2003. She had completed her matriculation in 1993. After her
parents' deaths, she had been suffering from depression and
this led to her addiction to drugs. She continued to try several
career options, but in vain. Depressed, Lily attempted suicide
several times. It was at this juncture that she reached out
to Jeriko. After a lot of effort during the treatment process,
she is now optimistic that she will live a normal life. At
present she is supporting her brother, also a drug addict,
and her stepsister, who is studying for her Class XII. Through
the IGSSS project she was sent to RRTC, Umran for three months
training on food processing and is now in turn teaching others
on how to make pickles and cards. Lily has also undergone
a selection process as a peer educator. Her aim is to one
day become an expert card designer. |
